Morning, folks. Peter Dive here, coming to you live from my favorite corner of the world. It’s Saturday, June 13th, and the kettle’s just whistled its morning tune. I’m currently looking out from the Rhiw Goch Inn across the Rhinogydd mountains. If you’re checking the forecast today here in Trawsfynydd (LL41 4UY), you’ll see it’s a classic Welsh summer mix: a bit of sun, a few light showers, and that cool mountain breeze that reminds you you're alive.
Every June, I see the same debate playing out on Reddit and over the fence in Bronaber: "Peter, do we go for the full-blown adventure under canvas, or do we tuck ourselves into one of your lodges?"
It’s a fair question. Some people are born with a groundsheet in their hands; others won't settle for anything less than a king-size bed and underfloor heating. As the man who runs the show here, I’ve seen it all, from the campers who love a morning drizzle to the families who realize halfway through a Friday night storm that a roof is a pretty great invention.
So, here is my no-nonsense morning verdict on the Snowdonia Lodge vs. Summer Camping showdown.
The "Lodge Life": When Luxury Beats the Rain

Look, I love the outdoors, but I also love my comforts. If you’re looking for a Snowdonia Lodge experience, our Lodge House and The Hideaway are basically my pride and joy.
On a morning like today, where there's a light rain over the valley, there is nothing quite like waking up in The Lodge House. It’s a two-story renovated dream with underfloor heating. You haven't lived until you’ve walked across a warm floor to make your first coffee of the day while looking at the mist rolling over the mountains.
Why go for a Lodge or Apartment?
- The "Weather-Proof" Factor: In North Wales, "summer" is a relative term. If the heavens open, you aren’t huddled in a sleeping bag; you’re in a luxury cast iron bath in The Lodge House or relaxing in our Hideaway Bed apartment.
- Space to Breathe: The Lodge House fits a family easily (king-size bed, two singles, and a sofa bed). It means you aren't tripping over each other’s boots.
- The Kitchen: Our self-catering apartments, like the one in The Hideaway, have modern kitchenettes. Great for a quick breakfast before heading to Coed y Brenin Forest Park.
- Romantic Vibes: If you’re here as a couple, The Hideaway is unbeatable. It’s got that 16th-century historic charm but with the "mod cons" you actually want.
If your idea of a Snowdon holiday involves a glass of red by a window rather than a torch in a tent, the lodge wins every single time.

The "Camping Soul": For the True Adventurers

Now, let’s talk about the purists. Our campsite at Rhiw Goch Inn isn't your average "field with a tap." We’ve got 5 electric pitches with gravel hardstanding (essential for keeping your van level and dry) plus plenty of space for tents.
There is a specific kind of magic to camping in Trawsfynydd in June. When the sun does break through, the sunsets over the Rhinogydd are, and I don't say this lightly, world-class.
Why choose Camping at Rhiw Goch?
- Direct Access: You are literally on the doorstep of some of the best Snowdonia walks. You can wake up, unzip your tent, and be on a trail within minutes.
- The Vibe: There’s a community feel here. You’ll find mountain bikers prepping their gear for Coed y Brenin and hikers swapping stories about their ascent of Yr Wyddfa.
- The Price Tag: Obviously, it’s the most budget-friendly way to enjoy a Holiday in Wales. More money for the pub later, right?
- The Views: From our pitches, you get an uninterrupted view of the mountains. It’s the ultimate "digital detox."

Addressing Your Reddit Questions (The Peter Dive Way)
I spent some time on Reddit this morning (don’t tell Leticia, I’m supposed to be checking the gutters), and I saw a few recurring questions about visiting our neck of the woods.
"Is June too rainy for camping in Snowdonia?"
Listen, it’s Wales. It rains. But June is actually one of our driest months on average. Today might have a few "liquid sunshine" moments, but usually, it’s light and clears up fast. If you’re worried, that’s exactly why we have the hardstanding pitches: no waking up in a swamp.
"What’s the best base for Coed y Brenin mountain biking?"
You’re looking at it. Rhiw Goch Inn is perfectly positioned on the A470. We are minutes away from Coed y Brenin Forest Park. Most of our guests stay here specifically because they can spend the whole day on the trails and be back here for a hot shower (or a soak in that Lodge House bath) by 5 PM.
"Where can I see the best sunsets in North Wales?"
Right here from our campsite or the stone steps of The Hideaway. Because we face the Rhinogydd mountains, the sun sets right behind the peaks, painting the sky in colors you won't believe.

Peter’s Saturday "To-Do" List (June 13th)
If you’re staying with us today, or just driving through Bronaber, here’s how I’d spend this Saturday given the breezy weather:
- Morning: Coed y Brenin Forest Park. Because of the tree cover, it’s the best place to be if there’s a bit of drizzle. Whether you’re on a bike or just walking the dog, it’s peaceful and sheltered.
- Lunch: Local Flavor. Head into Trawsfynydd village. It’s steeped in history: make sure to visit Yr Ysgwrn, the home of the poet Hedd Wyn. It’s a powerful bit of Welsh culture.
- Afternoon: Harlech Castle. About a 25-minute drive from us. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and looks imposing regardless of the weather. Plus, the beach there is great for a windy walk to blow the cobwebs away.
- Evening: The Rhiw Goch Vibe. Come back and relax. While we’re still working hard on the full renovation of the main 16th-century Inn building (trust me, it’s going to be spectacular once the tavern and games room are open!), the grounds are perfect for a BBQ or just sitting out and watching the mountains.
The Verdict: Which one for you?
If you want my honest opinion?
- Choose the Lodge if you’re bringing the family or if you want to guarantee a good night's sleep regardless of what the Welsh clouds decide to do. It’s a "home from home" but with better views.
- Choose Camping if you want to feel the grass under your feet and you’re here to tackle the trails from dawn 'til dusk.
Whichever you pick, you’re getting the same incredible location and the same warm welcome. We’re more than just holiday accommodation; we’re a piece of Welsh history that we’re bringing back to life, one stone at a time.
Ready to plan your trip? Don’t leave it until the last minute: June and July are filling up fast!
