There’s something about a North Wales sunset that just hits differently. Maybe it’s the way the light bounces off the peaks of the Rhinogydd mountains, or how the Irish Sea turns into a sheet of liquid gold. Whatever it is, I’ve spent more than my fair share of evenings perched on a stone wall here at Rhiw Goch Inn, pint in hand, watching the sky turn every shade of purple and pink imaginable.

If you’re staying with us here in Bronaber, you’re already in the box seat for the best show in town. But I know what it’s like when the kids are hungry and you want to combine that "wow" moment with a decent plate of chips or a local ale.

I’m Peter Dive, and after years of exploring these lanes (and a few local taps), I’ve pulled together my top 15 spots within an hour of our base in Trawsfynydd where you can grab a family meal and catch the sun dipping below the horizon.

1. The Home Turf: Rhiw Goch Inn, Bronaber

I might be biased, but you really can’t beat our own backyard. Whether you’re staying in The Lodge House, The Hideaway, or you’re pitched up at our camping site, the view west towards the Rhinogydd range is spectacular. We’re currently working hard on the full restoration of the 16th-century Grade 2 listed inn (bringing it back from the 2018 fire, brick by historic brick!), but for now, our guests enjoy the best sunset terrace in Snowdonia. Bring a BBQ or a picnic to your deck and watch the mountains glow.

  • Location: Bronaber, Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4UY
  • Distance: 0 minutes (You're already here!)
  • Website: www.rhiwgochinn.co.uk

2. Dylan’s Restaurant, Criccieth

This is a classic for a reason. Housed in a stunning Art Deco glass building right on the seafront, it’s like sitting in a greenhouse made of scenery. The kids love the pizzas, and the mussels are legendary. If you time it right, the sun sets right behind the castle: it’s pure magic.

  • Address: Maes y Mor, Criccieth, LL52 0HU
  • Distance: ~25 mins from Bronaber

3. Norbar, Llanaber

Just north of Barmouth, this place is built into the hillside overlooking the sea. It’s got a modern, chic vibe but remains very family-friendly. Their terrace is one of the best places in North Wales to watch the sun disappear into the sea while tucking into a burger.

  • Address: Llanaber, Barmouth, LL42 1RE
  • Distance: ~25 mins from Bronaber

A peaceful campsite setting at Rhiw Goch Inn during sunset, perfect for a family holiday in North Wales.

4. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog

Only a ten-minute hop down the A470 from us, The Grapes is a traditional 17th-century coaching inn. It’s nestled in the Vale of Ffestiniog, and while you won’t see the "sea plunge," the evening light hitting the surrounding oak woods and the Dwyryd estuary is something special. Great for a proper Sunday roast.

  • Address: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4EB
  • Distance: ~10 mins from Bronaber

5. Dylan’s, Barmouth (Llanaber)

Wait, another one? Yes! Dylan’s recently took over a spot at the north end of Barmouth. It offers that same reliable family menu with expansive views across Cardigan Bay. The sunsets here are big, bold, and uninterrupted.

  • Address: Llanaber Road, Barmouth, LL42 1RR
  • Distance: ~25 mins from Bronaber

6. The Golden Fleece Inn, Tremadog

Tremadog is a bit of a hidden gem for food. The Golden Fleece has a quirky, cave-like bar that kids find fascinating, and plenty of outdoor seating on the square. You get the sun setting over the towering cliffs behind the village, which makes for a very dramatic backdrop to your dinner.

  • Address: 12-14 Market Square, Tremadog, Porthmadog, LL49 9RB
  • Distance: ~20 mins from Bronaber

7. Aqua Beach Bar, Llanbedrog

If you fancy a slightly longer drive (about 50 minutes), this is the ultimate "holiday" spot. You’re literally on the sand. It’s incredibly relaxed: the kids can play in the surf while you wait for the food. It’s probably the most iconic sunset-and-a-cocktail (or mocktail) spot on the Llŷn Peninsula.

  • Address: Llanbedrog Beach, Pwllheli, LL53 7TR
  • Distance: ~50 mins from Bronaber

8. Prince Llewelyn Hotel, Beddgelert

Beddgelert is one of my favorite villages. The Prince Llewelyn sits right near the river. In the summer, the evening light filters through the mountain passes of Snowdonia, creating a golden haze over the village. It’s a great spot after a day of hiking near Snowdon.

  • Address: Smith St, Beddgelert, Caernarfon, LL55 4YB
  • Distance: ~25 mins from Bronaber

9. Sea View, Borth-y-Gest

Just around the corner from Porthmadog is the tiny, colorful village of Borth-y-Gest. The Sea View café/restaurant does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s quiet, quaint, and offers a beautiful perspective of the estuary as the tide comes in and the sun goes down.

  • Address: 1-2 Mersey St, Borth-y-Gest, Porthmadog, LL49 9TR
  • Distance: ~20 mins from Bronaber

A family enjoying an outdoor meal at a coastal restaurant in North Wales, with the warm glow of a summer sunset in the background.

10. Castell Deudraeth (Portmeirion)

For something a bit more upscale but still welcoming to families, head to the Portmeirion estate. Castell Deudraeth is a stunning Victorian castle with a brasserie. The grounds are world-famous, and the view over the Dwyryd Estuary at sunset is world-class. Plus, the kids will love exploring the "Italianate" village before dinner.

  • Address: Portmeirion Ltd, Minffordd, Penrhyndeudraeth, LL48 6ER
  • Distance: ~15 mins from Bronaber

11. Victoria Inn, Llanbedr

Located in the pretty village of Llanbedr, the Victoria Inn has a fantastic beer garden right by the river. It’s a great stop if you’ve spent the afternoon at Shell Island. The atmosphere is quintessential Welsh pub: warm, friendly, and great for families with dogs.

  • Address: Llanbedr, LL45 2LD
  • Distance: ~15 mins from Bronaber

12. The Ship Inn, Aberdyfi

It’s a bit of a trek (about 50 minutes south), but the drive through the mountains is half the fun. Aberdyfi is a postcard-perfect harbour town. The Ship Inn sits right on the front. You can grab your food and sit by the window to watch the boats bobbing in the golden light.

  • Address: 8 Seaview Terrace, Aberdyfi, LL35 0EE
  • Distance: ~50 mins from Bronaber

13. Bryntirion Inn, Llandderfel

If you’re heading towards Bala, "The Bryn" is a must. It’s a cozy, traditional inn with a play area for the kids. While it’s in a valley, the way the sun sets behind the hills of the Berwyn range makes for a very peaceful, rural evening.

  • Address: Llandderfel, Bala, LL23 7RA
  • Distance: ~30 mins from Bronaber

14. The Last Inn, Barmouth

One of the oldest pubs in Wales, full of character (and a literal well in the bar!). It’s located near the harbour. After your meal, walk two minutes to the Barmouth Bridge to see the most famous sunset in North Wales. The reflection on the Mawddach Estuary is unbeatable.

  • Address: Harbour Rd, Barmouth, LL42 1EL
  • Distance: ~25 mins from Bronaber

15. The Australia, Porthmadog

Right on the high street in Porthmadog, this is a great, reliable spot for families. It’s owned by Purple Moose Brewery, so the beer is top-notch. It’s a short walk from the harbour, where you can watch the sun set over the steam trains of the Ffestiniog Railway.

  • Address: 31-35 High St, Porthmadog, LL49 9LU
  • Distance: ~20 mins from Bronaber
