Listen, I’ve lived around these parts long enough to know that a "holiday in North Wales" isn't just about the hiking or the mountain biking, though, let’s be honest, that’s a huge part of why you’re here. It’s about that golden hour. You know the one. That time of day when the kids have finally stopped buzzing from their Zip World adrenaline rush, the light starts hitting the Rhinogydd mountains just right, and you realize you desperately need a cold pint and a view that doesn't involve a TV screen.
As the guy behind the scenes here at Rhiw Goch Inn, I get asked all the time: "Peter, where’s the best spot for a family dinner where we can actually see the sunset?"
Well, grab a chair. Whether you’re staying in our luxury Lodge House, cozying up in The Hideaway, or pitched up at our campsite here in Bronaber, I’ve put together my personal "Sundowner Shortlist." These are the spots within an hour of our front door (LL41 4UY) where the food is honest, the kids are welcome, and the views are, quite frankly, ridiculous.
1. The Rhiw Goch Inn Grounds (Right Here!)
Postcode: LL41 4UY
Travel time: 0 minutes (You’re already here, lucky you!)
I might be biased, but you really don't have to go far. While we’re still hard at work restoring the main 16th-century Grade 2 listed Inn (trust me, the tavern with the games room is going to be epic when it's finished), our grounds are already a sunset sanctuary.
If you’re staying in The Hideaway, you literally have a front-row seat to the sun dipping behind the Rhinogydd peaks from your window seat. For our campers, there’s nothing like firing up the BBQ on your electric pitch while the sky turns purple. We’ve got plenty of space for the kids to run wild safely while you relax. It’s peaceful, it’s historic, and it’s home.

2. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog
Postcode: LL41 4HN
Travel time: 15 minutes north on the A470
Just a short hop from Trawsfynydd, this is a classic coaching inn that feels like stepping back in time. They have a massive outdoor terrace which is perfect for a summer evening.
- Why I love it: It’s family-owned and they actually care about the food. It’s not just "beige" kids' meals; it’s proper Welsh hospitality.
- Local Tip: It’s right near the Ffestiniog Railway tracks. If you time it right, you might see a steam train chugging past while you eat.
3. The Golden Fleece Inn, Tremadog
Postcode: LL49 9RB
Travel time: 20 minutes
Drive towards the coast and hit Tremadog. The Fleece sits on a beautiful village square.
- The Vibe: When the evening sun hits the towering cliffs behind the village, the whole place glows.
- For the Kids: Their children's menu is top-tier. It’s a great spot to hit after a day at Black Rock Sands or exploring the castles of North Wales.
4. The Bryn Arms, Gellilydan
Postcode: LL41 4RL
Travel time: 10 minutes
This is my go-to for "no-nonsense" pub grub. It’s a friendly, roadside local where hikers and mountain bikers from Coed y Brenin (which is only 15 mins away) congregate.
- The Vibe: Very relaxed. If the kids are a bit muddy from the trails, nobody is going to bat an eyelid here.
5. Snowdonia Parc Pub & Microbrewery, Waunfawr
Postcode: LL55 4AQ
Travel time: 40 minutes
If you’ve spent the day doing the Snowdon Mountain Railway in Llanberis, stop here on the way back.
- The Vibe: It’s a microbrewery (win for the parents!) and it sits in a wide valley. You get these long, slow, golden sunsets that seem to last forever. The kids can watch the Welsh Highland Railway trains pass right by the beer garden.

What’s Happening in June 2026?
If you're visiting us this week (June 17th onwards), there is plenty of action nearby.
- June 20: The Ultra Wales 50 is taking place. The HQ is at Coed y Brenin Forest Park (LL40 2HZ). Even if you aren't running 51 miles (I certainly aren't!), the atmosphere at the visitor center is electric.
- June 21: There’s a massive South Snowdonia MTB event happening on the natural trails around us. It’s a great chance to see some pro riders in their element.
Peter’s "Pro-Parent" Tips for a Snowdonia Evening
- Layers, people! Even in June, once that sun dips behind the mountains in Bronaber, the temperature drops. Bring a hoodie.
- Book ahead. It’s summer 2026 and everyone wants a piece of the Snowdonia magic. If you’re heading to The Grapes or The Golden Fleece, give them a ring.
- The "Llyn" Walk. Before dinner, take a quick stroll down to Llyn Trawsfynydd (LL41 4RW). The reflections on the water at dusk are the stuff of Instagram dreams.
Ready to catch the best sunset of your life?
We still have a few mid-week spots left in The Lodge House and some space on the campsite for the coming weeks. If you want a base that’s smack-bang in the middle of all this beauty, with direct access to the best of Snowdonia, come and see us.
Check our availability and book your next holiday in North Wales directly on our site for the best rates.
See you at sundown!
