It’s June in Snowdonia (or Eryri, as we locals call it), and if you’ve been scrolling through Reddit lately, you’ve probably seen the same question pop up a hundred times: "Is it worth camping in North Wales in June, or should I just book a lodge?"

Look, I’ve lived at Rhiw Goch Inn long enough to tell you that the "Great Welsh Summer" is a bit like a lucky dip. One minute you’re basking in a sunset that looks like a painting over the Rhinogydd mountains, and the next, you’re wondering if your tent flysheet is actually a kite.

I’m Peter Dive, and whether I'm overseeing the renovation of our 16th-century Grade 2 listed inn or helping a guest find the best route up Snowdon, I’ve seen it all. If you’re planning your epic North Wales trip and can’t decide between the rugged charm of our campsite or the luxury of The Lodge House, let’s break it down properly.

The Lodge Life: Why Underfloor Heating is a Game Changer

Let’s be real, sometimes you just want a proper bed. If you’re coming to Bronaber or Trawsfynydd for a week of serious hiking or mountain biking, the Snowdonia Lodge experience at Rhiw Goch Inn is hard to beat.

I remember a group of mountain bikers who stayed in The Lodge House last year. They’d spent the day at Coed y Brenin Forest Park (which is just a stone's throw away from us at LL41 4UY) and came back absolutely caked in mud. Because the Lodge has underfloor heating and a luxury cast iron bath, they were human again within an hour. You just don't get that in a sleeping bag.

Why choose a lodge stay?

  1. The "Dry Gear" Factor: If you’re doing Snowdon holiday walks, your gear will get damp. In our holiday accommodation, you have space to dry your boots and coats.
  2. Sleep Quality: The Lodge House features a king-size bed and two singles, perfect for families who don't want to wake up because a sheep coughed three fields away.
  3. The Views (Without the Wind): You can enjoy the sunset over the mountains from the comfort of The Hideaway, our cozy one-bedroom apartment, without having to zip yourself into a fleece.

The Camping Case: Waking Up in the Heart of Eryri

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love a good tent. There’s something about unzipping your tent at 6:00 AM and seeing the mist rolling off the Trawsfynydd hills that makes you feel alive.

At Rhiw Goch Inn, we’ve set up our campsite to be as "pro-camper" as possible. We have five electric pitches (essential for those of us who can't live without a phone charge) and plenty of space for traditional tents.

Why camping wins in June:

  • Total Immersion: You’re literally sleeping in the middle of history. Our site dates back to the 12th century, and you can feel that tranquility when the stars come out.
  • Budget-Friendly: It leaves you with more "pub money" for when you head into the local villages for a pint of Welsh ale.
  • Direct Access: You can walk straight from your tent onto the trails. No driving, no parking faff.

Answering Your Reddit Questions: Snowdonia Edition

I spent some time on the "FindAQuestion" and "Reddit North Wales" boards recently to see what's actually bothering you lot. Here’s the "Peter Dive" take on your most frequent queries:

"Is it too cold to camp in Snowdonia in June?"

Short answer: Usually no, but pack a jumper.
The daytime highs are around 18°C, but the nights can drop to 8°C. If you’re in a tent, you want a 3-season sleeping bag. If you’re in our holiday accommodation, you’ll be laughing because we keep things nice and toasty.

"Where is the best base for Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) walks?"

A lot of people say Llanberis, but if you want to avoid the crowds, Trawsfynydd and Bronaber are secret gems. We’re positioned right on the A470, making it incredibly easy to reach all the main trailheads while being far enough away to actually hear the birds instead of traffic.

"Can I wild camp in Snowdonia?"

This is a big one. No, you shouldn't. Eryri National Park rules are clear: wild camping isn't permitted without landowner permission. Stick to an official pub or campsite like ours at Rhiw Goch Inn. It’s safer, you get a hot shower, and you aren't annoying the local farmers (trust me, you don't want to do that).

The Rhiw Goch Experience: More Than Just a Bed

When people book a Snowdonia Lodge with us, they often ask about the history. I’m currently neck-deep in renovating our 16th-century inn. It was damaged by fire back in 2018, but we’re slowly bringing it back to life as a tavern and games room.

Living here is a trip. One day I’m checking the underfloor heating in the Twin Bedroom of The Lodge House, and the next, I’m looking at stone walls that have stood since the time of the Welsh Princes. It’s that mix of "luxury" and "legend" that makes this place special.

Peter’s Top Tips for Your June Trip

If you’re heading our way this summer, here’s how to do it right:

  1. Book Mid-Week: June weekends are buzzing. If you want the mountains to yourself, come on a Tuesday.
  2. Visit Coed y Brenin: Even if you aren’t a hardcore mountain biker, the walking trails there are stunning. Check out their official site for maps.
  3. Don't Forget the Rhinogydd: Everyone looks at Snowdon, but the view of the Rhinogydd mountains from our campsite at sunset is, in my humble opinion, the best view in Wales.
  4. Support Local: Whether it’s a local pub or a craft shop in Trawsfynydd, your visit helps keep these historic communities alive.

The Verdict: Lodge or Camping?

So, which is actually better?

  • Choose the Lodge if: You’re bringing the family, you value a good night’s sleep, you’re mountain biking and need to wash off the grit, or you just don't trust the Welsh clouds.
  • Choose Camping if: You want to be at one with nature, you’re on a budget, and you want to wake up to the most incredible views in the UK.

Whichever you choose, Rhiw Goch Inn has you covered. We’re perfectly positioned for your next Holiday Wales adventure. From the historic charm of our apartments to the fresh air of our campsite, we can’t wait to welcome you to this beautiful corner of the world.
