There’s a specific moment every evening here at Rhiw Goch Inn that I never get tired of. It’s that half-hour before the sun dips behind the Rhinogydd mountains, when the light turns everything a sort of dusty gold. If you’re staying in The Hideaway or parked up on the campsite in Bronaber, you know exactly what I mean.
I’m Peter Dive, and if there’s one thing I’ve mastered during my time restoring this 16th-century beauty, it’s knowing exactly where to find a cold pint and a decent plate of food after a long day of work (or a long day of hiking, if you're the guest and I'm the host!).

1. Right on Your Doorstep: The Rhiw Goch Inn Vibe
I might be biased, but you really don't have to go far for the best view in Snowdonia. While we are still hard at work restoring the main 16th-century Grade 2 listed inn (trust me, the tavern is going to be legendary), the grounds are already the place to be.
If you’re camping with us, there is nothing quite like cracking open a local Welsh ale right outside your van as the sun sets. We’ve got five electric pitches and plenty of space for tents, all positioned to catch that evening glow. It’s quiet, it’s wild, and honestly, the "commute" from your camping chair to bed is about six feet.

2. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog (10 mins away)
If I’m looking for a proper "old world" pub feel, I head down the A470 to Maentwrog. The Grapes Hotel is one of those places that feels like it’s been there forever: mostly because it has (it’s 17th century).
It’s got a fantastic terrace which is brilliant for an early evening drink. They do a mean Sunday roast, and the atmosphere is always buzzing with a mix of locals and hikers. It’s the kind of place where you can wear your muddy boots and nobody blinks an eye.

- Distance: Just a quick 10-minute drive from the Inn.
3. The Cross Foxes, Dolgellau (15 mins away)
Heading south towards Dolgellau, you’ll hit the Cross Foxes. This is a bit more "refined" than your average pub: think stylish interiors and a really creative menu. If you’re staying in the Lodge House for a special occasion or a romantic weekend, this is where I’d suggest you go for dinner.
They are very dog-friendly too, which is a massive plus if you’ve brought your four-legged companion along for the Snowdonia walks.

4. Cwellyn Arms, Rhyd Ddu (30 mins away)
Now, if you don't mind a slightly longer drive (about 30 minutes through some of the most stunning scenery in the UK), the Cwellyn Arms is a cult classic. This place is constantly talked about on Reddit as one of the best pubs in the National Park, and for good reason.
It sits right at the foot of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). It’s got real log fires, a huge selection of real ales, and it’s the perfect place to swap stories with other hikers who have just come off the Rhyd Ddu path.

5. Brondanw Arms (The Ring), Llanfrothen (20 mins away)
Locally known simply as "The Ring," this is a hidden gem. It’s part of the Brondanw estate and has a very unique, slightly bohemian feel. The garden is lovely in the summer, and the food is honest, local, and delicious. It’s tucked away from the main tourist trails, so you get a real taste of authentic Welsh hospitality.

The "I Just Want to Eat in My Pjs" Option
Sometimes, after a day of mountain biking at Coed y Brenin Forest Park, the last thing you want to do is put on "going out" clothes. If you’re staying in the Hideaway or the Lodge House, you have a full kitchen, but if you want someone else to do the cooking, head into Trawsfynydd village.
Not Only Spaghetti is a local favourite for takeaway. It’s exactly what it sounds like: great pasta, but also burgers and other comforts that hit the spot after a day on the trails. There’s also The Hook in Dyffryn if you’re heading back from the coast.
What’s On This July?
Since it’s mid-July 2026, the area is buzzing. If you’re here this week, you’re perfectly timed for a couple of big ones:
- The International Snowdon Race (18th July): Even if you aren't running to the summit and back (I certainly am not!), the atmosphere in Llanberis is electric. It’s worth the 45-minute drive just to watch the elite runners make us all look very unfit.
- Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau (16th–19th July): This is a fantastic folk and world music festival just down the road in Dolgellau. The whole town turns into one big stage. It’s family-friendly, full of great food stalls, and a brilliant way to spend an evening.
