I’m Peter Dive, and if you’re reading this from a tent or one of our lodges here at Rhiw Goch Inn, you’ve likely already noticed that the sun is doing something quite miraculous today. It’s Thursday, July 16th, 2026, and I’m currently sat on the terrace overlooking the Trawsfynydd valley with a coffee that is approximately 40% caffeine and 60% optimism.
The air is already warm, the sheep are looking slightly confused by the lack of drizzle, and the Rhinogydd mountains are standing sharp against a sky so blue it looks like a postcard from somewhere much more expensive.
Whether you’re zipped into a sleeping bag on our campsite or waking up in the king-size comfort of The Lodge House, today is going to be a "big hat and extra water" kind of day. Let’s get into the morning brief.
1. The Weather: A Proper Welsh Scorcher (Seriously)
First thing’s first: the weather. We usually joke that if you can see the mountains in Wales, it’s about to rain, and if you can’t, it’s already raining. Not today.
Today, July 16th, we’re looking at a high of 27°C in the valleys around Bronaber, and potentially up to 34°C in some of the more sheltered spots. Up on the summits of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), it’s a balmy 21°C.
- Visibility: Crystal clear. You’ll see all the way to the coast if you’re high enough.
- UV Index: Very High. Please, for the love of all that is holy, wear suncream. Nobody wants to look like a boiled lobster by lunchtime.
- Fire Risk: Extremely High. The ground is bone-dry. If you’re camping with us, please be extra careful. No open fires, and keep those gas stoves on the gravel pitches.
2. Camping vs. Lodge Life: Which Side Are You On?
I get asked this a lot on the local forums and Reddit: "Peter, should I rough it in a tent or go for the luxury?"
Honestly? It depends on how much you like your knees.
The Camping Experience at Rhiw Goch Inn
Our campsite here at LL41 4UY is, in my totally unbiased opinion, one of the best-kept secrets in North Wales. We have five electric pitches and plenty of space for tents.
- The Vibe: It’s quiet. We aren’t one of those massive, noisy holiday parks. It’s just you, the mountains, and the occasional owl.
- The Morning Ritual: There is nothing quite like unzipping your tent in Bronaber and seeing the mist lifting off the Trawsfynydd lake.
- Pro Tip: Pitch your tent facing West. The sunsets over the Rhinogydd are the stuff of legends.
The Lodge Life (The "I'm Too Old for Ground Mats" Option)

- The Lodge House: Two stories of renovated bliss. If you spent yesterday mountain biking at Coed y Brenin Forest Park, you’re probably currently soaking in that luxury cast iron bath. I don't blame you.
- The Hideaway: This is my personal favourite for couples. It’s got a one-bedroom setup that feels like a private sanctuary. Plus, the sunset views from the window are basically a private cinema screen.

3. Reddit-Style Snowdonia Q&A: Summer Edition
I spend a fair bit of time lurking on r/Snowdonia and r/UKHiking, and the same questions pop up every July. Here are my "Peter Dive" takes on them:
Q: "Is it too hot to hike Snowdon today?"
Peter: Not if you start at 5:00 AM. If you try to head up the Llanberis path at midday today, you’re going to have a bad time. Carry at least 3 litres of water. If you’re staying at Rhiw Goch Inn, you have direct access to some of the quieter Snowdonia walks. Why battle the crowds at the summit when you can have a mountain to yourself ten minutes from your door?
Q: "Where can I find a decent pub near Trawsfynydd?"
Peter: Well, as many of you know, we are currently in the middle of a massive restoration of our 16th-century Grade 2 listed Inn. After the fire in 2018, it’s been a labor of love. We’re turning it back into a proper Welsh tavern with a games room and more apartments. Until then, I’ve put together a list of my favourite local spots for a sundowner right here on our blog.
Q: "What's the 'real' Snowdonia experience like?"
Peter: It’s not the queue for the summit café. It’s the smell of the gorse in the heat, the sound of the stream behind the campsite, and that feeling when you finally take your boots off after a 10-mile trek. It’s the history of places like Rhiw Goch Inn, which dates back to the 12th century. You’re walking on history here.
4. Peter’s Pro-Tips for a Thursday in July
If I were you (and I wish I were, because I have a lot of renovation admin to do today), here is how I’d spend this glorious Thursday:
- Morning: Coed y Brenin. Get to the Forest Park early. The tree canopy provides some much-needed shade, and the mountain biking routes are world-class. It’s just a short hop down the A470 from us.
- Lunch: Picnic by the Lake. Head down into Trawsfynydd. Find a spot by the water, keep an eye out for ospreys, and just breathe.
- Afternoon: The "Big Soak". If you’re in The Lodge House, get that underfloor heating off (you won't need it today!) and prep the cast iron bath. If you’re camping, head to the coast at Barmouth for a quick dip in the sea, it’s about a 25-minute drive.
- Evening: Sundowners at Rhiw Goch. Grab your folding chairs, a cold drink, and sit on the grass. The sunset today is predicted to be a purple and orange masterpiece.
