There’s a specific moment every evening here at the Rhiw Goch Inn that I never get tired of. The sun starts to dip behind the Rhinogydd mountains, the sky turns a shade of pink that looks like it’s been plucked straight from a postcard, and a hush falls over Bronaber.
I’m Peter Dive, and if you’ve stayed with us before, you’ll know I’m a sucker for a good sunset and an even better pint. Whether you’re back from tackling the Snowdon paths or you’ve spent the day white-knuckling it on a mountain bike at Coed y Brenin, the evening is all about three things: good food, local ale, and keeping the kids entertained long enough so you can actually finish your drink.

1. Our Home Turf: Rhiw Goch Inn
Before you wander off, let’s talk about where you’re standing (or sitting). We’re located in Bronaber, Trawsfynydd, LL41 4UY.
Our history goes back to the 12th century, and though the main 16th-century inn is currently undergoing a massive renovation (it’s going to be a cracker when it’s finished: think tavern, games room, and more apartments!), we’ve still got plenty of space for you.
- The Lodge House: A luxury two-story home perfect for families.
- The Hideaway Bed: My favourite for couples: the sunset views over the mountains are unbeatable.
- The Campsite: Five electric pitches and plenty of space for tents.
Nothing beats watching the kids burn off their last bit of energy in our play area while the sun sets over the peaks. It’s why people keep coming back to the Rhiw Goch Inn.
2. Top Family-Friendly Pubs & Restaurants
When you’re looking for a proper feed, you’re spoilt for choice. Here are the spots I personally vouch for within an easy drive:
- The Cross Foxes (Trawsfynydd, LL41 4SE): Our closest neighbour! It’s a classic village pub. Perfect if you want to stay local and enjoy a friendly atmosphere without driving far.
- The Grapes Hotel (Maentwrog, LL41 4HN): This place is legendary for its Sunday carvery. It’s very family-friendly, and the views from the terrace are stunning. It’s only a short hop from Bronaber.
- Oakeley Arms (Tan Y Bwlch, LL41 3YU): A big, spacious, family-run spot. If you’ve got a larger group, this is the one. Their home-cooked meals are consistent and exactly what you need after a long hike.
- Tafarn Pencei (Porthmadog, LL49 9AT): Heading to the coast? This harbour pub has a great kids' menu and lets you soak in the maritime vibes of Porthmadog.
- Y Bistro at Aberdunant Hall (Prenteg, LL49 9SR): Pro tip: kids eat free on Sundays here! It’s a bit more "posh" but still very welcoming for families.
- Snowdonia Parc Pub & Microbrewery (Waunfawr, LL55 4AQ): This is a goldmine. They have their own microbrewery (the real ale is top-tier), a playground for the kids, and it’s right next to the Welsh Highland Railway station.
- Prince Llewelyn Hotel (Beddgelert, LL55 4YB): Located in one of the prettiest villages in Wales. It’s dog and kid-friendly, making it a great stop-off after visiting Gelert’s Grave.
- Pont-y-Pair Inn (Betws-y-Coed, LL24 0BN): A traditional spot in the heart of the "Gateway to Snowdonia." Great for hearty pub food after exploring the nearby waterfalls.
3. Family Fun: Afternoon to Evening
If you haven't filled your day yet, these attractions are all within an hour's drive of the Rhiw Goch Inn and pair perfectly with an evening meal:
- Llyn Trawsfynydd Walk: Right on our doorstep! It’s an easy, flat walk around the lake with a lovely cafe at the visitor centre.
- Coed y Brenin Forest Park: Just down the road for world-class mountain biking and walking trails.
- Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways (Porthmadog, LL49 9NF): There is something magical about a steam train ride through the mountains.
- Zip World Llechwedd (Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3NB): Home to Bounce Below (massive underground trampolines) and the Slate Caverns. It’s an absolute must for active families.
- Portmeirion Village (Minffordd, LL48 6ER): The famous Italianate village. It feels like another world and is perfect for an afternoon stroll before dinner.
4. Don't Miss: July 2026 Local Events
If you're visiting us this month, make sure to circle these dates on your calendar. July is absolute peak season for local culture!
- Barmouth Food Festival (Sunday 5 July): Barmouth Harbour, LL42 1LS. Expect live music, kids' activities, and more local produce than you can shake a leek at.
- Snowdonia Trail Marathon Eryri (11-12 July): Based around Llanberis. Even if you aren't running (and I don't blame you!), the event village is great for families.
- Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau (16-19 July): A brilliant Welsh music festival in Dolgellau. Very family-friendly and a great way to experience the local language and culture.
- Snowdon Race (18 July): Watch the superhuman runners sprint up and down the mountain from Llanberis. There are always food stalls and entertainment.
- Criccieth Festival (Mid-July): A mix of comedy, walks, and exhibitions in the seaside town of Criccieth.
- Gŵyl Car Gwyllt (Early July): A music and culture festival in Blaenau Ffestiniog that celebrates the local quarrying heritage.
Peter’s Pro Tips for Your Visit
- Book Ahead: July is busy! If you want a table at The Grapes or The Oakeley Arms, give them a ring a day or two before.
- The A470 is Your Friend: We are perfectly positioned on the A470, making it easy to zip between Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog, and Dolgellau.
- Golden Hour at the Inn: Try to be back at the Rhiw Goch Inn at least once for sunset. Grab a drink from your lodge or camper, sit on the grass, and just look at those mountains. It’s better than TV, I promise.
- Weather Prep: This is Snowdonia. It can be sunny in Bronaber and tipping it down in Betws-y-Coed. Bring layers!
