I’m sitting here with a steaming mug of coffee, watching the early morning mist peel back off the Rhinogydd mountains. There’s something about the air here in Bronaber that just hits different in July. It’s crisp, it’s fresh, and it smells like a mixture of wild gorse and the promise of a long day in the saddle. If you haven't visited us at the Rhiw Goch Inn yet this summer, you are officially missing out on some of the best weather we’ve seen in years.
I’m Peter Dive, and today I wanted to share a little "Morning Brief" on how to make the most of your Snowdon holiday this summer. Whether you’re the type who likes the luxury of a Snowdonia Lodge or you prefer waking up with only a thin layer of canvas between you and the Welsh wilderness, I’ve got some thoughts for you.
The July Vibe in Trawsfynydd
The weather right now is, frankly, spectacular. We’re currently in a settled spell of high pressure, which means the ground is bone-dry and the visibility from the peaks is endless. However, a quick word to the wise: because it’s been so dry, there’s a high wildfire risk across North Wales. We’re asking everyone to be extra careful: keep those disposable BBQs at home and stick to the designated fire areas at our site.
If you’re heading out today, here’s your quick checklist:
- Sunscreen: The sun is surprisingly strong on the exposed ridges.
- Water: More than you think you need.
- Layers: Even when it’s 25°C in the valley at Trawsfynydd, it can feel like a different season once you hit the higher fells.
Lodge Luxury vs. Camping Under the Stars
One of the questions I get asked most often while I’m pottering around the property is: "Peter, should we have booked the Lodge or brought the tent?" My answer is always the same: Why not both? (Though maybe not on the same night).
The Lodge House: A Home Away From Home
If you’re looking for a Holiday Wales experience that involves underfloor heating and a luxury cast iron bath, then our Lodge House is your winner. It’s a beautifully renovated two-story spot that’s perfect for families. I personally love the king-size bed: after a day of mountain biking at Coed y Brenin, my back certainly appreciates it.

For the couples or solo travellers, the Hideaway Bed is my favorite little secret. It’s a cozy one-bedroom apartment with views that will make your Instagram followers weep with envy. Seriously, the sunsets over the Rhinogydd from that window are world-class.
Our Campsite: The Real Snowdonia Experience
If you’re more about the "great outdoors," our campsite is currently buzzing. We’ve got:
- 5 Electric Pitches: Hardstanding gravel bases bordered by traditional stone walls.
- Spacious Grass Pitches: Plenty of room for the family tent.
- The View: Direct sightlines to the mountains.
- Accessibility: We’re right on the A470, which means you can be at the start of a Snowdon path in no time.
Answering Your Burning Questions (The Reddit Edition)
I spend a bit of time lurking on Reddit (don't tell Leticia, she thinks I'm always working), and I see the same questions popping up about holidaying in North Wales. Let’s clear a few things up:
"Is wild camping legal in Snowdonia?"
The short answer is no. You need landowner permission. The National Park is quite strict about this, especially on Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) itself. Instead of risking a knock on your tent at 3 AM, why not book a spot at the Rhiw Goch Inn? "Where is the best place to stay for a Snowdon holiday?"
I might be biased, but being positioned in Bronaber (LL41 4UY) is a tactical masterstroke. You’re far enough away from the chaos of Llanberis to actually enjoy some peace, but you’re centrally located for the A470. You can hit the Snowdon paths in the morning and be back in time for a sunset cider on our lawn.
"What should I pack for a summer camping trip in Wales?"
Expect the unexpected.
- Waterproofs: Even in a "dry" spell, a passing cloud can soak you in minutes.
- Sturdy Boots: Leave the fashion trainers for the city; our trails are rocky.
- A Power Bank: If you’re camping, you’ll want to keep that phone charged for navigation (and photos!).
The Rhiw Goch Story: Past, Present, and Future
For those who don't know, the Rhiw Goch Inn has a history stretching back to the 12th century. It’s a Grade 2 listed 16th-century inn that sadly suffered fire damage back in 2018. If you see me walking around with a clipboard or talking to builders, that’s because we are in the middle of a massive restoration project.
Our plan is to bring the tavern back to life, complete with a games room and more self-contained apartments. Every time you stay in the Lodge House or park your campervan on our pitches, you’re helping us restore a piece of Welsh heritage. It’s a labor of love, and I can't wait to pour the first pint in the restored bar.
Peter’s Local Gems: 3 Must-Do Summer Activities
If you’re staying with us this week, here’s what I recommend you do within a short drive of LL41 4UY:
- Llyn Trawsfynydd: A stunning lake just a stone's throw away. It’s perfect for a flat morning walk or a bit of fishing. The loop around the lake is about 8 miles of pure tranquility.
- Coed y Brenin Forest Park: If you brought your mountain bike, this is your mecca. It’s only a few minutes down the road and offers everything from family-friendly trails to "what was I thinking?" black runs.
- The Rhinogydd Hike: Everyone goes to Snowdon, but the Rhinogydd are right on our doorstep and often completely empty. It’s rugged, wild, and makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
